A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes (5/5)

Updated: May 26, 2023

A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes is a challenging read about the physics of the universe. It covers many aspects such as the role of gravity and quantum mechanics and how they relate to space and time. Additionally, it covers many of the classics such as the possibility of time travel and multiple universes. Although this subject in science is still widely undiscovered and mysterious, it is still written by a credible source because Steven Hawking is considered one of the most reliable physicists of all time due to his Ph.D. in cosmology from Cambridge and his many contributions to the physics and astronomy field.

This book was first recommended to me by my brother who got sick of the constant questions I was asking him. I was immediately indulged by its thought-provoking theories and facts. Although even still, most of the content of the book was very confusing and required further research. One of my favorite parts of the book was the science of Red Shift, which is used to show the distance of stars by using the Doppler effect. This works because as an object which is emitting waves travels at varying speeds away from you the color and pitch also change in different levels around it. It happens because as the object moves towards or away from its wavelengths it caused the frequency of the waves to change also. We use this to see how further away stars have more red colors because red is higher on the frequency scale for visible light colors. Hearing this was very interesting to me because it answered questions I never knew I had and raised many more questions to ask.

I think this book is exceptional but only for its very specific target audience. This book will likely come across as very boring and monotonous for people who are not already interested in its subject. As well as this people who are disinterested in its subject will not feel the curiosity that this book is meant to feed to you. Although for the people who match the target audience, I think this book will change your perspective on life and the way you look at everyday objects with a different understanding than you initially had. In summary, if you are disinterested in the subject of astrophysics then you should not read this book, but if you are interested then you should absolutely read it as soon as you can.
