Throughout this book he gives us just an imagination of what he had to go through and the things he saw. He shows his broken image of an innocent  child and having to mold into a mature kid that had to survive, and from trauma from the civil war.  At the beginning of this book shows his true character being this young kid full of energy, laughter, and positivity. Then quickly shifts when the conflict comes closer and is forced to run away from home.  This quick transition is shown through the whole book, quickly changing characters and forcing them to turn into this tough soldier.  This was seen to be the whole message of the book, a sense of quick maturity and toughest.  Another part of the book was shown as him being reborn. He shares how after he tried to find a sense of himself again and a new identity after the trauma of this war at a young age.  Showing Ishmael wanting to recover and interacting with other people and different organizations or groups.

The end shows how he has come along and recovered from serious problems, wanting to be a role model and living proof that things that are from the worst situations can come back strong and recover from anything.

Ultimately, this Biography from Ishmeal gives a deeper meaning than just reading words. Showing  physical and mental strength from such a young age in a bad condition, his perspective gives people an idea what it is like to be one of those scared innocent  kids that had to mentally  grow up and survive for themselves at such a young age.
