Before We Were Free tells the story of a young girl who has to experience the hardships of living in the Dominican Republic, and the discrimination she and her family face on a day-to-day basis. As if this isn’t stressful enough, her close family is able to flee to New York and experience freedom while she is stuck in the Dominican Republic with her brother, Mundín, sister, Lucinda, and her mother and father. This book was a good read. It helped me to see another side of the world where people can’t go about their normal lives because the government is watching their every move. It was a reminder of how grateful I am to even be able to go to school without having to constantly fear for my life. I always struggle finding a book that will teach me something, but also something that I find interesting. This is a book that I would recommend you read. Non-fiction books can be hard to read, but the constant action and plot-twists in Before We Were Free keeps you engaged and on the edge of your seat. You feel as if you are in Anita’s shoes, living life through her eyes.
