Belgarath The Sorcerer By: David and Leigh Eddings (4/5)

Belgarath The Sorcerer is the story of a young orphaned boy named Garath who, after being caught stealing from his village, traveled off on his own. As he journeys, he hears a voice guiding him towards a mysterious tower, with a boulder in front of the entrance. The voice tells him “Tell It to open”(Eddings, 23). Gareth does and, much to his surprise, the door opens, the voice is revealed to be the god Aldur who has no followers. Garath asks to be Aldur’s disciple and Aldur changes his name to Belgarath. Many more followers join Aldur and become sorcerers themselves. However, Aldur reveals to them an Orb, Called the Orb of Aldur. He explains to them that long ago a mistake happened and the world, which had once had one destiny had two destinies that competed to be the true destiny. He told them that they were the instruments of one of these destinies. Aldur’s brother, Torak, steals the Orb and is revealed to be the instrument of the Dark Prophecy. Belgarath and the other followers of Aldur, Prepare to go to war with the Angaraks, the people of Toark. They Unite the Alorns (The people of Belar), Marags (People of Mara), Niassans( people of Issa), Tolnedrans (people of Nedra, and the Arends (people of Chaldan). They Greatly outnumber the Angaraks, and instead of letting his people die, Torak uses the orb to crack the earth burning half of himself. Belgarath sneaks off to Mallorea, where the Angarks live, with Cherek, and his sons; Riva, Dras, and Algar. They are able to steal to Orb from Torak, but Belagarth finds out Belzedar, another disciple, has betrayed them. Riva, the only one who can touch the orb, is given the task of guarding the orb until the Godslayer, his heir takes the throne. Begarath the Sorcerer is the prequel to The Pawn of Prophecy and tells the events that lead up to Pawn of Prophecy, which begins when this book ends. I enjoyed this book because the author writes this book because after reading his other books, you are left with questions, which this book is great at answering, I also enjoy the personality of the narrator, who, being one of the characters leaves backtalk for other characters. I rate this book a 4 out of 5 because it wasn’t the best book I've ever read but I found it really entertaining.
