Erik Larson's excellent writing skills polish and shine his work and give a new astonishing view to his classic novel. Dead Wake by Erick Larson is a non-fiction book published in 2015 in New York City NY by Crown Publishers. The novel is 353 pages long and presents prevalent themes of bravery and resilience throughout the read. The story takes place in 1915 one year after the beginning of WWI. The book follows two characters on opposite sides of the war, one is the captain of the Lustiantania: William Turner, and the Walther Schwieger captain of a German U-boat. The book is about the build-up to the United States joining the allies to aid in WWI. After the death of innocent American citizens at the fault of Capitan Walther Schwieger it could be enough to push the states into war. The visual representation and diction throughout the novel made me feel like I was really in the moment, but the book falls off when there is almost no action, while there is a rise and fall to the story the lack of action and character development takes away from the meaning of the book. The novel is a good read but it's nothing special and the novel is hard to enjoy, but the book is non-fictional and is writing about the authentic experiences of real people and is very similar to a biography. Although the book has a great story and is a NY best seller there is minimal character development and gets stale as the reader goes on. I gave this book a ⅗ because personally, the plot was uninteresting and bland. I would recommend this book to people who want to learn more about WWI but I would not recommend the book fro people who want to read a diverse and interesting book for entertainment.
