In the book Fablehaven, author Brandon Mules writes an exciting fantasy novel about two kids, Kendra and Seth, who spend a few weeks with their grandparents on a preserve. While there, they learn about taking care of the land, and taking care of the creatures on that land. The story is told in first person by Kendra. This story is fantasy fiction. It is set in a magical preserve/forest that has many magical creatures, some bad and some good. The kids deal with unusual problems that are typical of fantasy novels, and they have to use problem solving to fix the situations that arise. The text coincides with the themes of growing up and problem solving. The book is a good read if you like fantasy and adventure stories. I thought the book was good, but the climax was underwhelming. There was a lot of buildup for a climax that spans around two pages. The conflicts were solved very easily, leading to a very disappointing few pages when it is supposed to be the most exciting part of the book. While I enjoyed the book, the climax could be longer and the conflicts could be harder to overcome. The way they are currently makes the book seem shallow, and the circumstances that should be very hard to fix are easy and under complicated. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fantasy adventure book. The text is easy to read and to understand. There are some references to mythological creatures, so you may want to look up the names to research them and know what they are talking about. I would rate this book a 3 out of 5 because while it is a good and interesting read, the climax was disappointing and could be elaborated on more. Some circumstances could be more difficult to overcome and solve. He could use more imagery to make the text more interesting as well. He could use more descriptive words to describe the garden, the forest, the house. He could make the situations more serious, the solutions more difficult to find. There are many things he could improve on to make this a more interesting and exciting novel.
