Lorien is a planet rich with life, its native people take amazing care of it with clean energy and coexist peacefully with the wild. For this, the spirit of the planet rewards them with incredible powers me and you could only dream of. Flight, Invisibility, Super strength, and so much more. Then there is Mogadore. A planet barren and stripped of its resources. The inhabitants there are violent and hungry for war. They eventually lead a surprise attack on Lorien. Lorien never stood a chance. Except, that they had managed to sneak 9 children and 9 Cêpan aboard a Loric ship, where they sped to Earth. When they arrived, each child and their Cêpan went into hiding. Separate from the others. They were all numbered and had a charm placed upon them. They had to be killed in number order from 1 to 9. Our story takes place in the perspective of number four (also called John), at age 15. Number three has just died. He is next. He and his Cêpan, Henri, are constantly moving to new homes to avoid being caught and killed by the overwhelmingly powerful Mogadorians. After moving from home to home over the course of fifteen years, he lands in Paradise, Ohio. There, he meets the love of his life and doesn’t want to leave despite begging efforts from Henri. His first legacy soon starts to manifest, an exciting feat for sure. He starts with Lumen, the ability to create light and heat from his hands, also making him impervious to heat. After some time of training with his lumen, Henri gets kidnapped. When John finds out, his next legacy introduces itself. Telekinesis, granting him the ability to move objects with his mind. He and his new friend Sam drive to a suspected address where they rescue Henri and leave before having a run-in with some Mogadorians. More days and days of training later, a video gets leaked to the internet of John using his power. The Mogadorians are onto them. At school, the attack begins. Beasts of many different shapes and sizes as well as Mogadorian soldiers with otherworldly weapons are there just for him. Of course, he is very scared of this, so he hides in a home-ec classroom. When he thinks they are just about to break in, a voice interrupts. They later find out this is number six. She is there to rescue them. Six has the legacies of invisibility and control of the elements. After a long, grueling battle between the Mogadorians and Garde, Six and John survive. The book ends with her, John, and Sam leaving Paradise in a truck, leading us to the next book, The Power of Six.
