Kingdom Come by Mark Waid was the book I read. Kingdom Come is a graphic novel about the importance of ethics and mentorship. It dives deep into its central themes, hope and the meaning of a hero. From the naked eye, the book is about the older generation of heroes retiring and leaving the spotlight for the newer generation. However, that newer generation is brash and reckless, forcing the elders to step in and fix the world and guide the way to a better generation of heroes. Under the microscope though it is much more complicated. The book begins with Norman McCay, a pastor who has lost faith in humanity. He is visited by a being known as The Spectre. The Spectre guides McCay as he spectates the story unraveling. McCay witnesses a world of the future, where the beloved heroes of today are old news. These new heroes are far younger and have no sense of morals. They fight whoever they believe are villains and do not give any consideration to civilians caught in the crosshairs. Eventually, Magog and his team of self-proclaimed “heroes” force the originals to step out of retirement. They fight and eventually, the older generation wins and restores balance to the world. McCay’s faith is restored and he gives a sermon to the church about hope and its importance. I found the book to be very enjoyable. It was very intriguing and helped address the importance of rules for heroes. Many people wonder why they do not kill and this book provides an explanation. It separates itself from other novels by providing the meaning of a superhero and how important it is that they follow a set of rules and have a conscious. I agree heavily with the themes of the book. Hope is above all one of the most important things anyone can have. Without it, people would not be able to go through life with a smile or succeed in anything. Morals are also very important to me. I like to live life knowing I am a good person, so seeing how important they are for superheroes and what happens without them was inspiring. The book suggests many things but one main one is that without a guide people crumble. The newer heroes were not there to shape and mold the younger ones, forcing them to make their own ideals and mentalities. In real life having a good influence to look up to is what makes a kind person. Without it, humans would wipe each other from the planet simply because they don’t know any better. The book did not teach me anything new but did help me comprehend just how important hope and morals are. I already knew it was good to have both but it helped me fully comprehend just how key they are to a peaceful and productive civilization. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was a very fun read and I felt like I learned something important after reading. There were no negatives about it, it was beautifully paced, written, and had a strong message for readers, simply a top-notch book.
