Krakatoa by Simon Winchester (2/5)

In Krakatoa, there’s not exactly a story to follow. The book follows several different storylines all of which are real events. All of the events pictured and described are to explain the significance of the eruption of Krakatoa. There are many maps and illustrations and the book is extremely history dense. When I first started reading, I expected to follow a storyline; perhaps someone whose life is affected heavily and directly by the eruption of Krakatoa. I was more disappointed when I realized that the book was more of a historical almanac. That being said, as a fan of history, I enjoyed reading this book but would not recommend it as a good read. The author has a few personal experiences and stories to tell about his experience with Krakatoa but they never really amount to much information. It’s just too difficult to get into and read through and for that reason, I have to rate the book as a ⅖.
