In Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan, Rand Al Thor, the main character, has his path set before he even took a breath, as the dragon reborn a historical figure who destroyed the world reincraneted, he has the potential to save the world but also doom it. Rand has to stay out of the clutches of the Aes Sedai, women with magical powers who wish to control him, and the Forsaken, a group of magicians who are turned to the Dark one, the evil lord who wishes to take over time itself. All while trying to sve the world from corruption. Specifically in Lord of Chaos, Rand has to defeat the forsaken Ravhin, who has taken over his home country, and Lanfear, his past self’s lover, who wishes to control him and take over using him. Leading thousands of Aiel, a group of desert dwelling barbarians who have a comlex system of honor, into the “wetlands” or non-desert to reestablish order to Andor and Cairhein the countries te two had invaded thorough replacing leaders with themselves and corrupting officials. Calling up his forces in the south, Rand reestablishes order in cairhein before learning the Queen of Andor, Morgase has died. To avenge her, Rand leads his forces to Andor to challenge Ravhin. Can RAnd succeed in uniting the world against the Dark One? I enjoyed this book because of the way that the author is able to weave a world of its own into the pages, making it seem almost real. Its shocking how some people, like Jordan, are able to weave a story that seems so consistent in itself. The only probem I have is the concept of balefire, magical fire that on touch removes whatever it touches form the world back in time depending on the strength of it,from seconds to days. I find anything to do with time distortion paradoxical. Also the concept of time is sometimes confusing rebirth events that always are the same but not always the same result. Otherwise thought the book is very self consistent and I definitely recommend it to everyone.
