Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (3/5)

This book was relatively easy to read but it was kind of hard to understand in some parts of it.

It is about two guys, George and Lennie, Lennie being a giant but mentally challenged and George being his “babysitter”. Lennie gets into trouble a couple of different times and gets himself into quite the pickle. Lennie plans to buy his own farm with George. Curly, the owner of the farm’s son, has a wife that we never learn the name of. The big turning point in this book is when Lennie accidentally crushes on the puppies while he is just trying to pet it. He then tries to hide but Curley's wife finds and tries to comfort him. They both say how they like to touch soft things. Curley’s wife then says that Lennie can touch her hair because it is soft. Then things take a turn for the worst and while Lennie is touching her hair, he pulls a little too hard and she gets mad at him. Lennie freaks out and crushes Curley's wife's head just like he crushed the puppy and she dies. Curley finds out about this and organizes a lynch party to catch and kill the runaway giant. George knows exactly where Lennie went to find him. He knows that if he killed Lennie right now he would not have to suffer the terrible death that Curley wanted for him. George tells Lennie things that will make him happy like rabbits, and moving away to a new farm. Then he shoots him to ensure that he won’t suffer more than he has to. The other people hunting for him find him there but George said that Lennie took a gun here and killed himself. This book showed a good friendship between these two guys. The friendship was one sided and George had to watch over Lennie for a lot of the book. It all went bad when Lennie was with someone without George there to help him. I think this book was pretty good and I would recommend this for someone to read in their free time.
