Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz (4/5)

Prisoner B-3087, by Alan Gratz, was published on March 1, 2013. Prisoner B-3087 is a historical fiction book with factors of real-life events, the overall theme of the book is finding hope among the horrors. It takes place in Poland in the 1930s when Nazi Germany was at its peak. A small boy Yanek Gruener is forced into a concentration camp and is exposed to the terrors of war. Through the 10 camps, he is shifted through over a span of 6 years he learns the value of life and how to never take it for granted because it can be taken away at any moment. “'We are alive,' I told him. 'We are alive, and that is all that matters. We cannot let them tear us from the pages of the world.” Moreover, the theme of finding hope in the horror is the most prominent part of the book giving the reader something to look out for not only in the book but also in their lives. This novel is a great read and I would definitely recommend it for anybody who likes to read historical fiction. With large amounts of character development and suspense, it's hard to put the book down. Although the book itself doesn't relate to our lives (because we don't live in the 1930s) the morals and the teachings hidden between the lines can be used to “find the hope in the horror”.
