Red Rising

The Book Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a Dystopian novel set on Mars. It has an extreme form of classes where humanity is divided into colors. Gold is the most privileged color. On Mars red people colonize. The population is further divided into colonies and “clans.” Each clan is named after a Greek letter. There is of course a most privileged clan. The reds lives are controller by the international government and are forced to slave away in the mines in terrible work conditions. Our protagonist, Darrow, is a 16 year-old prodigy at mining. He is married, however, this is normal in their society. His wife rebels by taking him outside the mines to look out at the stars. But they get caught and are sentenced to public lashings. During punishment, Darrow’s wife sings rebels again by singing a forbidden song and is sentenced to execution. Darrow vows to avenge his wife.

Although the plot was strong, I thought it was kind of basic. Also it has “controversial themes” like tyranny is bad, classism is bad and rebellion. But these themes are popular for a reason and this book shows why. Overall, my opinion is most indifferent to this book. Read it if you want to.
