Robison Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (3/5)

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe details the adventures of the book’s namesake as he sails throughout the world in search of more excitement and reward than his home of England can provide.

During the book, Robison Crusoe goes to many different parts of the world such as North Africa, the Caribbean, and South America, where something unfortunate usually happens to him. The entertainment the book provides comes from seeing how he gets out of whatever horrible situation he finds himself in, or watching as he ruins whatever opportunity he might’ve had for a good life.

My biggest problem with the book is that it seems to exist purely for entertainment, which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for, but I think the lack of any real message or meaning behind what’s going on makes the book seem a little empty in the end. It’s also fairly difficult to read because it’s written in the same way people spoke at the time (the book is set in the 1600s). I think Robison Crusoe is good if you’re looking for something fun to pass the time, but if you want to find a deeper meaning in what you read, I’d pick something else.
