When the earth is overpopulated, humans have to make drastic changes and sacrifices to save humanity. The book opens on an exciting note, in the future 2039, the earth runs out of space requiring humans to build a colony on Mars. The narrator in this book happens to be a 14-year-old boy, bound to a wheelchair. Tyce Sanders has many hobbies, including astronomy, space exploration, and virtual reality. Exactly 200 of the earth´s greatest minds were sent to start this new colony under a dome. Tyce has been trained through virtual reality since he could remember, he figured it was the director’s way of making him do his part for the colony. In a colony everyone has to do their part, for instance, Tyce’s mom is a botanist and his father is one of the pilots of the transport ships. Tyce doesn’t have many people to relate to as he is the only kid in the dome (colony). Later on, we learn the solar panels to the dome stop producing energy to power the filter. Secretly the director Stevens does the math and figures out there’s only enough oxygen left for 20 people. To avoid mass panic director Stevens declares 20 people have to sacrifice their lives to save everyone else. Later on, we see director Stevens get fired and sent home on the crew ship that arrives with Tyce´s father. Soon we learn there’s a deeper secret behind Tyce´s disability. Sigmund Brower does an excellent job at keeping the readers on the edge of their seats. I felt overwhelmed, and annoyed by the author’s cliffhangers but that is my only critique. I highly recommend this book. Overall a great read and an interesting story. This book taught me about life and sacrifices.
