Salt to the Sea is a historical fiction novel that takes place in East Prussia in 1945 that gives you 4 different perspectives. One of a nurse, one of a criminal, one of a young pregnant woman, and one of a lacking Nazi. The book starts by establishing every character's “hunter” that follows them throughout the book. Soon after, Three of the main characters' stories come together when they all become a part of the same group trying to flee East Prussia by getting on the MV Wilhelm Gustloff. The story navigates the relationship between two characters, the helplessness of one character, and the stupidity of another. This story also touches on the disappearance of the Amber Room. I found this book to be an insanely interesting read that was almost impossible to put down, the characters are all so interesting and very fun to dissect. Ruta Sepetys is an amazing author and I recommend anybody interested in historical fiction (especially Europe in the 1940’s) to check out some of her books.
