The book is made up of a collection of short stories woven together into one book each one follows its own storyline in some way. One of my personal favorites is the first one A Beautiful Bastard. This one talks about the war between the Gurkish army and the Union army. At first, the Colonels of the Union Army are all in a stadium spectating spars when the Gurkish come in with the sneak attack. This short story introduces the reader to the cocky and confident Colonel Glokta and does an excellent job of painting a picture of the character.
I was pleasantly surprised when I first read this book. The stories were laced together very well and it urged me to keep turning the page. I enjoyed how this book to a different approach to traditional stories and laced together all these different stories into one. I would recommend readers to keep their attention on the book because it can get confusing at times and I had to re-read it a couple of times to understand what was going on.
