Need a book with action and a little romance in a fantasy world about spies, witches, and kingdoms?
The book is called Six of Crows, written by Leigh Bardugo, and was published in 2015. Six of Crows is the first of a 2 book series, but there is a trilogy series that came out before and a dilogy series published after the Six of Crows. The books are slightly related to each other since all the series take place in the same fantasy world but the story is different as well as the characters. I heard there were a couple of small connections between the books but nothing that would affect your reading if you didn’t read the series in release order.
So about the book. Each chapter tells the story from a different character in the crew giving you the whole view of what is happening. This book is a story about Kaz and his crew of thieves, spies, etc. One day Kaz is offered 20 million kruge (their type of currency) to break a scientist out of prison. But not just any prison, a prison made for the worst of the worst. People like thieves, killers, and magic users. There is also enough romance to balance the book. Not too much or too little.
I really liked how this book started off with different characters that don’t play a role in the story and just foreshadows the reason why they need to break the scientist out of jail. It is mysterious and gets you hooked right away. One thing I didn't like about the book was that it wasn’t as intense or action-packed as I wished it to be. It wasn’t boring but most of the action and intenseness started halfway past the book.
The critique I gave about the book shouldn’t stop you from reading this book because overall it’s very well written and something that I wouldn’t get bored of if I re-read it. I also really liked that the characters in the story had very different backgrounds that lead them to travel and live together. The different perspective and the switching of the characters from each chapter was not confusing at all and tied the story really well together since it sometimes gave us foreshadowing if a character was plotting something secret.
