Son by Lois Lowry is the last book in The Giver series. Son tells a story of a woman named Claire trying to find her son, Gabriel. If you remembered, Gabriel was the baby that Jonas stole from his community since Gabriel was about to be released (basically killed) for having no purpose. Claire was Gabriel’s birth mother, and she goes on a journey to find her son. She arrives at a village where an evil man, the Trademaster, turns her into an old woman in exchange for Gabe’s location. She accepts this, and finds Gabe. Gabe is now grown-up with Jonas. Upon Claire’s arrival, he notices that Claire is Gabe’s birthmother and informs Gabe about it and also how the Trademaster is evil, which turned Gabe’s mother into an old woman. Gabe faces off against the Trademaster and defeats him through a little “reality check” of how everyone is happy and he can’t feed off of them, so Claire can turn back into a young woman. My reaction, at first, was disappointing, considering how nothing interesting happened for the finale of The Giver series. Many people felt the same, but the more I reread it, the more I thought that this wasn’t so bad and that I can appreciate the motherly love this book offers through Claire’s hardship to find her son. My advice is that if you like to read the book the whole way through, be patient while reading, and enjoy some motherly love, this book is for you.
