The Book Thief by Markus Zusak follows our main character, Liesel Meminger, in 1939, during World War II. She lives in Nazi Germany, and during this time she finds books and Liesel begins to risk it all by stealing books for her to read. At the peak of her book thievery, Liesel’s family hides a Jewish man, Max Vandenburg, in their basement, which is an extremely risky action where everyone's lives are at risk. Liesel and her family have to keep him a secret. Additionally, she begins to grow very close with Max, being each other’s closest friends. Before untimely Max ends up leaving in the middle of the night to avoid being caught. When things seem to be getting better, the bomb sirens go off and Liesel and her family all have to seek shelter in their basements. After an agonizing period of time, Lies
el wakes to find all of her family and friends dead. Finally, after a very long time jump, Liesel dies and Death carries her away and they catch up like old friends, revisiting all the places she had been when she was careless and young.
Where do I even begin? This book was a super easy but engaging read. I found it super interesting that the whole book is told from the point of view of Death and he adds little side comments that make you sit and think. Additionally, it’s interesting reading from this point of view because at first, I didn’t realize the p
oint of view it was being told from, so it was extremely confusing but then at the end, everything clicked for me and all of the little side comments and random parts of the book came together. Overall, this is the first book I’ve genuinely sobbed in.
Overall, if you consider reading this novel, take your time reading it and take in all of the small details. The small details all come together in the end creating a beautiful story. Finally, PLEASE remember this book is told from the point of view of Death watching over Liesel Meminger. Once you realize it becomes ten times more interesting to read.
