The Color Purple (5/5)

If you have a heart The Color Purple will break it. After its publication in 1982, The Color Purple achieved instant classic status, becoming beloved by both critics and the public. In 1983 it won both the National Book Award for Fiction and a Pulitzer prize for fiction. The Stephen Spielberg film adaptation released in 1985 received acclaim as well, being nominated for 11 Oscars and receiving the national board best film award. Despite all of this there have been several attempts to ban The Color Purple from libraries due to its depictions of controversial topics. The story begins in the early 1900s Georgia and details the physical, emotional, and spiritual journeys of two black sisters, Celie and Nellie through the decades. It was an engrossing read that had a deep emotional impact on me. The book does contain sensitive content so I would not recommend it to everyone. But I would definitely rate it five stars as it is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read.
