The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night (5/5)

D.E. Night’s historical fiction, Crowns of Croswald, begins in the kingdom of Croswald which is a dreamy, memorable setting introducing the main character, Ivy Lovely, who works as a servant, or as the people in this world call it, a scaldroney maid, who works with dragons to prepare food for the royal family of the castle, House Plum. Only 16 years old, Ivy had only dreamed of being free to do as she wishes and study at the school of magic, best recognized as Halls of Ivy, which holds students with powers, either by blood or through magical gems found in caves. The only freedom she has is really in her small room, which is run down and has no windows or source of light, and the field of slurry blossoms, a delicate, purple plant that smells of cotton candy and a magical aura, which are both places at House Plum that are her favorite to read and sketch in. Little does she know, her life is about to completely change from this repetitive, tiring routine. One day, she suddenly gets the chance to attend the Halls of Ivy and passes the barrier of her birthplace to the outside world, which activates her unique powers. She discovers secrets that slowly reveal her true unknown past and how vital she is to the kingdom. Darkness lurks all around and it’s her duty to protect Croswald and its future. With powers that run in her blood, she gradually becomes stronger and more able to harness them to defeat a dangerous and dark threat, the Dark Queen. What is emphasized as the story progresses is having some motivation can make you successful in the end, as it pushes people to be their greatest and always sees room for improvement for the better.

I felt that the book had many plot twists and surprises that would never have been anticipated as the journey goes on. You gradually feel sucked into the book and brought along with the adventure itself and form some sort of relationship and motivation for Ivy Lovely through her struggles and hardships, especially with how well the emotions of the characters are brought to life.

If you are considering reading this book, be prepared for the constant twists and turns that come with the many risks of the story. It is a really good read and perfect for those who prefer historical, magical, and coming-of-age adventures. It is a completely brilliant made-up world that uniquely shines with all of the magical elements.
