The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien (4/5)

J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantastical masterpiece will shape fantasy literature for centuries to come. The first part in his series The Lord of the Rings which was published in 1954, The Fellowship of the Ring sets the scene for an epic trilogy. It all starts with Frodo and Sam, two hobbits living in the peaceful and joyous Shire. That all changes, however, when they are thrust into a perilous quest that will take them across western Middle-Earth, a journey fraught with countless perils and dangers. They are exposed to a world of wizards, elves, men, trolls, goblins, orcs, talking trees, unexpected alliances, and countless other elements that make this story great. If you like a long read, then this book is perfect for you. If you want a shorter and faster view of Frodo’s great journey, however, then you’re probably better off sticking to the movies. In addition to the length and density of the book, it uses very old-timey language and dialogue that will make it a difficult read. I really enjoyed this book because it transported me into a really interesting and detailed world. If you enjoy this book, then you should definitely read the next two books, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. If you like the universe as a whole and are not particularly limited to the hobbits, then another good book is The Silmarillion, the background for the whole universe of Frodo and Sam. I would rate this book 4 stars out of 5 because it’s very lengthy and dense but interesting all the way through.
