The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin (4/5)

Lucas C.

My Book Love book is The Fifth Season, written by N. K. Jemisin. It is a fantasy book that I thought was pretty good but not super amazing. The Fifth Season is about a woman named Essun trying to survive in the wake of a cataclysmic disaster. The world’s magic - called “Orogeny” - involves controlling plate tectonics and manipulating earth. Every so often, the world is hit by some kind of disaster which the people call a “Season”. I liked the book a lot but some of the dialogue was hard to follow. One of the main themes of the book was how people cope with disaster. Another was how society views those who are different, through the interactions between normal people and Orogenes, or magic users. Overall I thought it was an interesting book, and would be less confusing if the reader uses the glossary at the end of the book (which I did not find until I finished the book).
