The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan (3/5)

“My name is Apollo. I used to be a god.” This novel by Rick Riordan is the first of five books in the series, “The Trials of Apollo”. These follow the life of Apollo after he has been punished and banished to Earth. It follows the events of the previous series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”, and “The Heroes of Olympus”, although it is not integral to read these to follow the plot of this book. Throughout this story you will follow Apollo as he experiences what it is like to be one of the many mortals who worship him. Throughout the novel he must come to terms with his new life and lost power, and learn what it truly meant to be a god. Between all of this, there has been a recent disturbance, within the Oracles, which tell prophecies for the many demigod heroes. He knows that if he ever wants to return to his previous power, he must do whatever he can to stop the disturbances. The readers follows Apollo on his journey with many new and unlikely characters. I enjoyed reading this book, however, I did not enjoy it as much as the previous novels by Rick Riordan. This novel leaves me wanting more of the pre established characters. Apollo is a self centered character who learns what it means to be a flawed human, and this is a theme present throughout the book. I believe that it was mentioned too much and became repetitive, however this is who Apollo’s character is. I also felt as if the stakes were not as high as they could have been and they only affected the main protagonist. I recommend this to anyone who has read the prior novels and is itching for more. If not, I recommend starting with the original series.
