Life is too short to live a boring life. This is the central theme to The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. Published in 1937, The Hobbit is a prequel to the popular series The Lord of the Rings, which takes place in a fantasy-esque world. Middle Earth is very different from our own earth; it has different species such as elves, dwarves, and hobbits, with fictional places and fictional towns. The story takes place in Hobbiton, where the protagonist, who’s a hobbit, sets out on an adventure, with the help of a wizard and thirteen dwarves. The hobbit, Bilbo, didn’t want to set out on the adventure at first, however, with convincing help from the wizard, Gandalf, he eventually decides to set out. The goal of the adventure is to reclaim the lost gold of the dwarves, who lost their home due to a dragon named Smaug. They meet many different creatures, trolls, goblins, elves, spiders, and eventually the dragon. At the very end, the goblins, men, elves, dwarves, and orcs all fight out on a major battle scene. Bilbo at the very end becomes alienated from his hobbit community, however, is happy that he took the risk of going on the adventure.
This book is extremely well-written and has lots of depth and imagery. It was very easy to vividly imagine the scene however, there were a lot of plot conveniences. It felt like they were saved by things completely random, and didn’t help advance the plot. However, it was very interesting and intriguing to see what would happen next and what was occurring. I think people who are interested in fantasy and learning about fantasy worlds would love this book, as it has a large amount of story-building that will be used later in The Lord of the Rings. It had fun action scenes and an intriguing storyline that could be enjoyable for people who like such books.
The book should be rated a 4 as it was extremely well written, however, the way characters got out of difficult situations felt extremely cliche. The book was extremely enjoyable to read and every scene was enjoyable to read.
