The historical fiction novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is the story of Amir, a young boy in Afghanistan who does everything with his best friend Hassan. Amir and Hassan are like brothers whose bond and trust for one another was thought to be unbreakable. The day they flew their kite together changed everything. It leads to a tale of regret and redemption alongside a battle with culture and society. As wars break loose, and violence is shed, Amir must confront the demons of his past.
The contents of the novel relates to war and how it affects so many families. It’s made me realize how devastating a war can be and how much collateral damage it can inflict upon so many people. When reading this book, it truly made me realize what unwavering loyalty looks like. It amazes me that a bond between two people can go such lengths. This is not a lighthearted and easy book to read. It keeps you on your toes and latches onto a deep rooted feeling inside of you. I strongly suggest you get comfortable before you embark on the journey of The Kite Runner, because you will be here for a while.
“There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood.” Amir knows how a war affected his childhood and how he was not able to enjoy his youth to the fullest. Children shouldn’t have to mature so quickly because of what is going on around them. No child or person should have to go through the hardships and deaths a war can bring.
