The Land of Stories: A Grimm Warning by Chris Colfer (4/5)

The Land of Stories: A Grimm Warning is the third installment in Chris Colfer’s Land of Stories series. The book features twin brother and sister Conner and Alex Bailey, who only 2 years ago discovered that there is an alternate realm known as the Fairy Tale world and their very own grandmother, was the esteemed Fairy Godmother. At the outset of the book, the main portal between the Fairy Tale World and the Earth has been closed with Alex on the Fairy Tale side, training to become the next Fairy Godmother, and Conner on the real world side, preparing for a trip to Germany where he would view the findings of a time capsule set 200 years before by the Brothers Grimm. On his side of the realm, Conner soon find clues left over centuries by the Brothers Grimm that warn of an impending attack on the Fairy Kingdom and with Alex distracted with training to be a fairy, he must find his way back to the Fairy Tale World in order to warn Alex and the rest of Fairy Tale World in order for them to come together to defend against the attack. Along the way, throughout both their journeys, both Alex and Conner face many challenges and hardships, both of which allow them to discover more about themselves and who they are as humans. Additionally, the twins will soon find that the attacks against the Fairy Tale World are actually being driven by something from their past, something that could help them understand more about the mysterious death of their father, years ago.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because Colfer has a way of writing his stories so that the reader is forced to expect the unexpected and there are always plot twists that suddenly change how the reader views the book. I was also impressed with how Colfer has taken seemingly cheesy and childish stories and plots and tied them together to actually make the book enjoyable for a reader such as myself who is 14 years old.

Overall, The Land of Stories: A Grimm Warning is a well written book that is most definitely action-packed and would appeal to lovers of fantasy fiction. Although it may seem childish to many, I’d advise people to take a chance on Colfer because what he lacks in content, he makes up for in creative writing, humor, and action. Even as someone who growing up, was not as familiar with some of the Disney characters that are referenced in this book, Colfer’s writing still allowed me to keep track of the plot and enjoy the book just as much as any other reader would.
