The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin (4/5)

The Last Bookshop in London is a very heartfelt story about an orphaned girl during the time of World War II. The Last Bookshop in London, by Madeline Martin is a fairly recent book, although taking place in 1939. The main character, Grace Bennett, lives with her uncle after her mother dies. She and her best friend, Viv, move to London in hopes of finding a job and a new life for herself. As she comes to live with an old family friend, Mrs. Weatherford, Grace finds a job at a local bookshop. Unfortunately, London descends into chaos as Britain enters World War II. Dealing with air raids, blackouts, and rations, Grace comes to find a new passion. When tragedy strikes, Grace must use her newfound passion to help everyone through the times.

The Last Bookshop in London was amazing. The figurative language and detailed descriptions were incredibly immersive and inspiring. It allows the reader to picture the characters and their personalities perfectly in their head. The plot line and tragedies, while somewhat predictable, were touching and relatable. Martin does a wonderful job writing this story, making it incredibly realistic, unlike many historical fiction novels her book touches on what it actually meant to be living in that time. The only critique I have is that the time skips throughout the novel, which were placed to get through the entire war, grew tiring and frequent at times. Other than that this book was amazing. Personally, I think bookworms especially would enjoy this book, with all of the character developments that happen. However, even if you don’t usually enjoy books or historical fiction novels in particular, I think that this book would still be fun to read and very much relatable.
