The book, The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni, takes place in Zalindov, which is a death prison. This is where Kiva Meridan fights to survive, while she awaits her family’s arrival to rescue her. Kiva is the prison healer, so when the Rebel Queen shows up, terribly ill, Kiva is charged with keeping her alive. Then she receives word from her family, informing her that they are coming and telling her to keep the Rebel Queen alive. So when the Rebel Queen is sentenced to the Trial by Ordeal, which are elemental challenges against water, fire, earth, and air, Kiva knows that the Rebel Queen won’t survive it. So Kiva steps up and volunteers in her place. She will face great difficulties but if Kiva were to succeed both she and the Rebel Queen would be able to claim their freedom. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I felt that there was good character development throughout the story. There was also good imagery and sensory details that helped me understand the story better. But the book had a slow start and some parts were really boring to read. This book isn’t the most fascinating book ever, but it was still a worthwhile read.
