The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy (4/5)

The French Revolution is now at hand, and aristocrats are being hunted down by common citizens to be sent to the guillotine. However, an elusive hero known only by the name Scarlet Pimpernel is saving these nobility figures and helping them safely escape the clutches of the bloodthirsty French citizens. His sly tricks have kept his identity a secret, keeping agent Chauvelin in as much suspense as frustration in figuring out who he is. Lady Marguerite Blakeney finds herself fervently admiring this unknown hero who has saved countless lives. She has more interest in the Scarlet Pimpernel than her own husband, who seems to have fallen out of love. When Lady Marguerite’s dear brother is heard to be in trouble, she can only hope that by some miracle of a person her brother will return safely home. The only question is, who is the identity behind the mask?

This novel was quite enjoyable to read. There was drama, romance, suspense, and I found the plot and characters likable and entertaining. It does tend to be slow in some parts but it picks up quickly after. The action was definitely more interesting halfway through. Baroness Orczy paints the scene using her vivid use of imagery and the subtly glamorous touches that emphasize the luxury of the nobility. I found each character interesting to read about and liked the way they were portrayed throughout the novel. It is a frivolous story and doesn’t give you much to grapple with, so it’s a good option for those who want a lighter classic novel. A quick read, it is ideal for lovers of classics who are looking for something less dense to digest.
