The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (4/5)

The Song of Achilles follows the Greek Iliad of Patroclus and Achilles. This book is narrated by Patroclus, a young prince who was seen as untalented by all of the kings. When he was exiled he met another prince, Achilles, who would be his long-time companion. Achilles was strong and charismatic, having many prophecies about him becoming the greatest warrior. After meeting each other, Patroclus and Achilles realized that they saw each other as more than just friends and that they had romantic feelings for each other. Achilles was then sent to the mountains, with Patroclus sneakily coming along, to learn skills from the Centaur Chiron that would become important later on. While at these mountains, Patroclus’s admiration for Achilles grows stronger, and their relationship strengthens as well. After they finish these lessons, they are forced into the Trojan War. During this war, there were many factors that changed the way that they thought of each other. Because of this, they made many sacrifices for each other even if people were against their relationship. In my opinion, this book was a great read. It brushes on many hard subjects that many people could relate to. I liked how it showed how much someone would do for someone they loved, even if it puts their own life at risk. There are many points in the book where the reader can feel the emotions behind the characters, and some parts specifically made me feel super strong reactions toward them. It was a great adaptation of the Greek story of Achilles and Patroclus. I would rate this book a 4/5 because I enjoyed the book and would read it again, but during some parts, I thought I would be able to skip over them. Overall, The Song of Achilles is a fantastic book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Greek Mythology.
