The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann(3/5)

In a dystopian society, by the name of Quill, no one is permitted to experience freedom nor feel any sense of emotion. If the people of Quill are ever seen breaking the rules, they would be reported, then sent to a yearly event called “The plague”, where they are supposedly eliminated. Mr. Today, the assistant of Quill’s high priest, had secretly been hiding the unwanteds in a hidden world where everyone is taught to be creative, artistic, learn magic, and feel emotions they never knew existed. In time, the magical world, Artime, was discovered resulting in a war because the high priest, Justine, didn’t accept this idea.

My first impression of the book was that the build up for the plot was very gradual. But after some time, there were many scenes that I thought were very creative and exciting, such as when the hidden world was discovered, because I was curious as to what impact it would have on the people of both worlds. But the author could have included more perspectives besides the main character’s point of view.

Overall, I think that this novel was an interesting read, but it would have been more intriguing or thrilling if it had more unexpected conflicts and turning points. For future readers, be prepared to be placed in a dystopian fantasy, including a wide range of characters who are both emotionally and physically at war.
