Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman (4.5/5)

Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman is the second book in the Scythe series, a dystopian sci-fi series asking the question of "What would happen if humanity advanced to the point where death could be reversed?". In this world, revival is possible and death is temporary; meaning you could live for hundreds of years if you're lucky. However, even in a world like this, it's necessary to keep the population under control, so people called scythes are appointed to "glean" (where you're killed without being revived) people at random. The book picks up a year after where it left off with Citra Terranova, who has finished her apprenticeship and goes by Scythe Anastasia, being recognized as a threat to the corrupt part of the scythedom while Rowan Damisch, now going by Scythe Lucifer, works behind the scenes gleaning immoral scythes.

As someone who doesn't have the attention span I had when I was a kid, I find it more and more difficult to get invested in books- but this book was so interesting and addictive, I couldn't get distracted. Interesting, likable characters were introduced, the plot was intriguing, and the message of "Death is what makes life valuable" is one I definitely agree with.

This series is one of the best I've read in a while. I'd definitely recommend it to readers who are interested in dystopian fiction, but not the Fahrenheit 451 or The Giver kind of dystopia; Thunderhead is more similar to books like Cinder, The Hunger Games, or Divergent.
