Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand (4/5)

Justin B.

A 1 in a trillion story where an Olympic track star is drafted into the military and survives on a raft for 47 days. During World War 2, America was drafting healthy U.S. citizens into the military to fight, causing a long-distance track star soon to beat the world record, to be flying a plane to fight against the Japanese. Louie and two other men on the plane, Phil and Mac, have to fit on a one-person raft and survive until they reach land or get captured by the Japanese. I really liked this book because the whole scenario of living on the sea for 47 days sounds like it would be fiction. But Hillenbrand adds in real pictures from this time to show that everything that she is describing happened to these men out at sea. I like how the first part of the book describes Louie as a child and how he finds his passion for running but switches very fast into him being in the military, and this shows how fast life can change. I really like this book, I did not want to put it down because it felt like I was on the raft with them and wanted to see how my friends turned out. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in survival in the harshest conditions and if you don’t like to read, go and watch the movie I’m sure it is fantastic as well.
