The George Orwell novel 1984 is a fictional story warning the reader of how dangerous totalitarianism can be. 1984 is set in a world where a socialist party controls every aspect of life, with no room for error. Winston Smith will attempt to avoid the gaze of Big Brother, to pursue a better life.
This book’s insight into an alternate future while interesting still leaves a lot of questions unanswered, leaving the reader feeling stuck in this world. George Orwell sets up this world not as a dictatorship about to collapse, but a larger than life figure with control over the world, which although not directly mentioned, is because any information in Oceania is controlled by the party, with no cracks in the system. The question this book raises is whether or not it is possible to topple Big Brother with the odds already low. In fact in one of George Orwell’s other famous novels, Animal Farm, even without the limiting of information, we can see that ending a strong dictatorship can be impossible. Most people will see socialism as a bad ideology, however a lot of times may fail to understand why, with this book being a perfect explanation.
The book serves as a great looking glass into another world, where humanity created a dystopia built on lies and fake information. It shows the reader the signs of the rising power of government and warns us to stop them, before we are too late. For people who plan on reading this book in future, if you can make it through the start, you won’t regret reading this.
