The Crash is a newly released thriller by Freida McFadden that deepens the idea of following your instincts. The story follows a pregnant woman who crashes in the middle of a blizzard and is rescued by a couple who seem off. It starts with one main character, Teagan, who is also eight months pregnant, losing a life-changing opportunity and deciding to visit her brother in the mountains. However, an incoming blizzard thwarts her plans and causes her to crash into a tree. Teagan tries to find someone who can help her, and eventually, a truck comes to help her. Instead of driving her to the hospital, the man takes her to his home with his wife to stay until the snow clears. The wife, who was a nurse, has only ever wanted a child but could not do so. But there could be a way to help Teagan get what she wants. This book can only be described in one word: mind-bending. It has so many twists and turns and leaves you guessing. Each chapter is alternating, so you get to see both sides of the story as well as a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter. I fully support the author’s choice to end the book as she did. Despite how gruesome her books can be, there is usually a happy ending, and this one delivered. Both characters got what they wanted, but not how you would expect it. One major idea in this book is pregnancy and motherhood instincts, and it deals with serious issues in our world, like sexual assault. In the end, this story does lead to justice for Teagan, unlike the real world. This is a crucial subject that warrants discussion despite its complexity. This book clearly outlines the events and the consequences of her realization. The resolution helped me understand how betrayed one can feel after what happened and people’s response but showed how we can fix ongoing issues in our world today. Despite McFadden’s tricky plots, she still uses real-world themes to help us understand the damage they can cause and that someone might not always be who you think. This book is one of my top books read this year. Freida McFadden is a brilliant author with the best plot twists you never see coming. Out of all the books I’ve read by her, this would be in my top three favorites. This book immediately drew me in and the alternating perspectives led to cliffhangers at the end of every chapter.
