Wicked Saints is a chaotic story of love, war, and betrayal in a fantasy world with gods. Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan is a New York Times Bestseller that came out in 2019. It is also the first book of a series of books. The book switches from two main characters, Nadya and Serefin. Nadya, the last cleric, has been fated by the gods to end the war between the god worshiping nation of Kalyazin and the heretic blood-magic using nation of Tranavia. When she is 18, she is forced to leave her Monastery for the first time by Tranavian forces. Serefin is the prince of Tranavia and the main general of the Tranavian army. Nadya makes allies with a pair of siblings from Akola and a suspicious soldier from Tranavia. With allies, she tries to kill the king of Tranavia to end the war while Serefin is taken away from the front but both of them learn things they shouldn’t have learned. Wicked Saints is a great book that makes you question many things about religion, gods, and life itself. The characters and passing were well written. Emily does a great job contrasting allies and their ideologies about many things. She also does a great job shifting character’s personalities as new information is introduced to them. The changes in perspective make you want to read more to find out what will happen. The only critique I have is Nadya’s love relationship with Malachiasz, one page they are fighting because he lied or withheld information then the next page they are madly in love. I believe if people like fantasy this book is a good read and if people don’t like fantasy, it is still a good read that can make you think a bit differently about life.
