A Good Girls Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (4/5)

The book, A Good Girls Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson, follows our main character Pippa “Pip” as she is working on her senior capstone project. Her topic for her school project? An investigation into what Pip believes is the wrong accusation of Sal Singh, the alleged murderer of his girlfriend Andie Bell who then committed suicide five years earlier. In order to solve this mystery Pip enlists the help of Ravi Singh, Sal’s little brother who also believes that his brother was innocent and framed. Along the way, these two face many precarious situations, dead ends, and anonymous letters warning Pip to end her investigation or else. All of this and more ties into a page-turning read that will leave the reader in shock. Not only does this book create a fun mystery, but it delves into other serious themes such as prejudice on the base of race and sexual assault.

I was pleasantly surprised with this read. I had gotten mixed reviews about this book from friends and social media before I read it so I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. Now, I can definitely say that this book is worth picking up for a fun and easy read. From loveable characters to an unpredictable plot, A Good Girls Guide to Murder has it all. I connected to all of the characters regardless of their role in the story and felt for them while reading which heightened the stakes for me. In addition, this book really hit the mark with the mystery. I could never predict what was going to happen next and it always kept me on my toes. The unique style of the book stuck out to me as well. The book occasionally includes Pip’s capstone report log entries where Pip keeps the interviews and information relating to the case. This unique inclusion gives us an inside look at exactly how Pip analyzed the information as well as a more interactive way to show interviews without boring the reader. The only thing I would say is that this book sometimes gets into parts where it moves slower but it’s definitely not a reason to not read the book.

Overall, A Good Girls Guide to Murder is a great book for anyone looking for an easy and quick mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I speak for most when I say that this ending is a very satisfying and unpredictable end to a great book. Make sure to pick up this book next time you're craving a fun mystery!
