A Long Way Home, the biography describing the life of Saroo Brierley is a fantastic and interesting tale of poverty, survival, surprises, and searching. The protagonist endures many ups and downs and went through many different phases in his life that define his view on life today. The Young-Adult and Non-fiction book is first set in an Indian village, where the readers get to see Saroo Brierly when he was a toddler. We then get to see his entire family tree and the problems happening with his mom and dad. Sadly though, he lives in a very poor shed that only has one room and is cold with a small fireplace near the not so well built mud wood wall. On the other side of his life, we also notice the fun memories and intriguing occurrences that happen throughout his first years of him living life. But unfortunately, something terrible happened that threw him into the unknown world outside of his hometown. This major problem is the main reason the book happened in the first place and throughout the book, the unfortunate circumstance gets mentioned multiple times so do not miss it when you read it. My first reaction to reading this book was excitement, interest, and curiosity as I considered what might happen to him next and where the storyline was turning to. When I was reading I realized that there were many dangers and turns he could’ve taken. The book while being entertaining and informative sheds a light on the situation in India where children are malnourished and are killed for organ trafficking. I agree with the author that this is a problem, more than a billion people are starving or stuck in terrible situations that we would never know about. Moreover, all of these people are barely getting by and living conditions for them are deteriorating with every passing day. This affected my thoughts on the situation as before I didn’t really get to see the true negative side of the world and the consequences of living in that world. I also agree with the author that we should do something about this because when more time is wasted, the less time we have to save them. Overall, I believe this book is great if not one of the best to read as it is a story of courageousness and never giving up. His perseverance allowed this awesome story to come alive and for us to read it is a miracle. Throughout the entire story, I’d say the beginning is good yet the main climax of the story really takes the cake and really gets you in the mood to read the book more with passion. But beware though the ending is a little bit worse than the beginning and doesn’t contain as much information to surf through. For any possible readers of this book, if you like inspirational, adventure, and remarkable stories, this is the book for you. But if you don’t like long climaxes, non-fiction, and short overall phases of a book, give it a try at least before deciding immediately on your decision.
