The behind-the-scenes of a political campaign can be hectic, yet Barack Obama did it four times while continuing to practice law and parent his two young children. A Promised Land provides an in-depth look at the challenges and excitements that come along with life in public office. The first quarter of the book illustrates Obama’s Illinois State Senate campaign and the difficulties of managing family, practicing law, and commuting from Chicago to Springfield and vice versa. Obama continued to manage family life with work life as he ran for U.S. Senate in 2004 and as he debated whether to run for President in the 2008 election. Obama highlights the mental, emotional, and physical strain that running a campaign, of any kind, had on him and his family. The extensive detail gives readers a look into what life was like for Barack Obama for his nearly 20-year career in public office. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in going into a public office, or even just to show the not-so-glamorous side of serving in a public office. Reading Michelle Obama’s book Becoming prior to this also detailed her perspective and struggles throughout her career and as First Lady of the United States.
