A Voice of Her Own: Becoming Emily Dickinson by Barbra Dana (2/5)

The life of the famous poet Emily Dickinson, in this beautifully written, but boring biography. In Part 1, The author writes the book as if we are Emily herself. We follow along as major changes happen in her life and we learn how they affect her and how she reacts to each change. We learn about the history of Emily and the person behind the poems we read.

In this book, the author’s writing is amazing. It is eloquent and it feels as if you are Emily herself. My only problem is that there is no major plotline or plot twists to look forward to, so it just feels like you are reading and it will never end. Honestly, I thought that it was boring and I was only able to read half of the book. I personally think that it is not a problem with the book or author, but more that I personally wasn’t captivated. I also expected something different going in because I didn’t know that it was a biography; mostly because I didn’t know who Emily Dickinson was.

I think that if you have a great interest in Poetry and Emily Dickinson, you would love how the biography is written and might find the book interesting. I just don’t think this was the right book for me, and I only was able to read up to the end of Part 1.
