The story "Looking for Alaska" by John Green is about a kid named Miles or “Pudge” Halter and he meets a girl named Alaska Young at a boarding school called Culver Creek. The book provides an action packed story of young adults that discover themselves and others. Themes of friendship and love give a proper insight into the character's identity growth. The characters explore by pranking people at school, having deep night conversations, and sometimes talking about more intellectual topics like the meaning of life which grow attachment to the characters. Their identities change and evolve through the story. Miles loves famous last words and isn’t in full control of his life at the start of the story. Towards the end after more social experiences with the Alaska and the group he grows and learns about his emotions and thoughts taking responsibility for his actions. Alaska is passionate and unpredictable, always trying to find the meaning of her life. By the end of the story she inspires the group to think more about their own lives. Overall, the group builds good relationships by spending time together and facing new events. You get to discover the group changing and evolving their identities as they grow up. Alaska is portrayed as curious, complex, and crazy while on the other hand Miles is more illustrated as more quiet and simple. For example when Alaska sent home fake progress reports of bad grades to the other kids that looked down on them and were wealthier. It proves her wild side and adventurous lifestyle while illustrating how her actions affect her. This gives the book a fun twist and is always entertaining. Miles’s roommate is The Colonel at the boarding school and they are close friends. He is a good friend and protective over the people he cares about. Takumi plays another role in the story as a more observant person who likes rap music and even freestyles every now and then. I love the way the author demonstrates the characters uniqueness, their lives throughout the story and how it’s always leaving me interested for more. The creativeness and thought put into this book is clear and fantastically done. The author John Green really dives into the emotions and thoughts of the characters and how a tragic event that changed the course of the story completely impacts their lives. It showcases grief and how the characters move forward in their own lives. The book really inspires you to think deeper into your own life and questions about it. It relates to the raw world and problems today. My advice to future readers would be to truly absorb and reflect on the book immersing yourself into the characters shoes. In conclusion the book is creative and exciting bringing you along for the ride of life. It caused me to examine my own identity and situation. As well as introducing me to how I can evolve and grow as a person by who I surround myself with.
