All The Best Liars by Amelia Kahaney (5/5)

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

Amelia Kahaney’s new novel, All the Best Liars, was published this year on April 5th and instantly caught my eye 2 months later. This fictional, “phycological thriller” will leave you in a locked jaw-drop after briskly reading it in one day. The moral Kahaney wanted you to take out of her novel is that fierce manipulation of your very first, childhood friendships that you can never forget can capture you for life and keep forever. In the beginning, a trio group, Syd, Rain, and Brie, grow up together in Palm Springs at nine years old. By their senior year in high school, nothing will be the same after the fire that started during a party. Or so they say. The three girls handle the situation differently. One takes the blame, the other does it by dying, and the last one by lying. Along with fake teenage friendship and first love drama, the reader will never suspect what happens on the last pages. As well as one friend going from deep in debt to insanely rich. Thinking her entire personality could change, she starts acting differently due to peer pressure and wanting to fit in. Due to the past of the girls’ friendship, a huge plot twist occurs as one character makes a smart move. This novel is insanely addictive and unlike other fiction books, makes sense by each word or action a character expresses. It was glued to my hands for 3 days straight and couldn’t be put down because I needed to know why this happened or who did what. The author is clever to include an accurate feeling. Where your insides are burning to make someone’s life miserable to make yours the best. “Jealousy” can be viewed as dirty looks from your enemy or when you begin to lose trust in them or maybe even when someone is trying to control you. Fun fact, Kahaney portrays envious behavoir from her characters in that same way. If you want to find out how, read it! The way she words everything in her new novel is beautiful and keeps the reader engaged. One of my favorite storylines is how the group of three becomes a duo for a short period of time until the other comes back and ruins everything. I feel like everyone has been in a situation like that and it seems realistic. It unfolds in such a suspenseful way I get goosebumps everywhere. A character named Spider in the book acts like a comfort blanket to his younger sister Syd. And to anyone who could relate to his origin story, will quickly fall in love with his character. Everyone is so different and authentic you’ll leave the book with only one favorite person. Unfortunately, Syd’s mom is a little primitive yet it’s still amazing. Overall, All The Best Liars does a wonderful job picturing a not-so perfect world for your average teenage girl, not everyone has a fair life and sometimes, things never go the way you want them too.
