all these things i've done by Gabrielle Zevin (4/5)

In this fictional book written by author Gabrielle Zevin, Anya Blanchard was not born into the most normal of lives. Her family consists of her deceased parents, her father being an illegal chocolate supplier, her mother a forensic investigator, two siblings Natty the kid genius, Leonoyd or Leo her mentally ill older brother, and Nana her only legal guardian who can rarely remember Anya’s own name, life proves remarkably difficult for this young girl to balance. Throughout the coming of age book, Zevin illustrates a story of hardship and perseverance written through a youthful yet matured viewpoint.

And although it was extremely captivating and dare I say moving, it wasn’t always clear with key information such as the timeline. Different dates are mentioned throughout the book, but it isn’t until near the end that you discover this event takes place in the distant future, but even that is a small amount of information being given. But I must say that I wasn’t expecting any of what the book ended up offering towards me in the sense that I was surprised by each plot twist that took place and by each quote added to the dialogue that provided insight into daily life and issues. Zevin does a fantastic job of creating a captivating and creative beach read, and if it weren’t for her leaving out a few main elements, this book deserves its high rating.
