An American Marriage by Tayari Jones (4/5)

An American Marriage, a novel by Tayari Jones, is definitely a meaningful story. Tayari Jones illustrates a complex relationship through vacillating characters pov’s. The novel begins with a young, black married couple, Roy and Celestial, that recently go visit Roy’s family. While visiting, Roy and Celestial book a room at the motel and stay the night. The next morning, Roy is taken by the police who claim he has raped the guest in the motel room next to his. Roy is sentenced to twelve years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. This story depicts Celestial and Roy’s marriage together throughout his incarceration. It also begins to glimpse the impact racial prejudice has on a person’s life, like Roy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It felt impactful and sad at times but none of that ultimately took away from the joy I felt while reading it. Tayari Jones created characters that were so unique and had me rooting for each of them. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is looking for a quick read or to simply start reading.
