As Old as Time by Liz Braswell (3/5)

As Old as Time by Liz Braswell is a twisted version of the wonderful tale of Beauty and the Beast. The novel is broken up into different points in time. It constantly switches to the origin story of the love between Belle’s parents. Then the story returns to the present, where Belle is meeting Beast. The story follows the original plot line of Beauty and the Beast, but there is a big twist. The beautiful fairy that cursed the Beast is actually Belle’s mother, and Belle and Beast spend the entirety of the story searching for Belle’s mother to fix Beast’s curse. This book was not particularly exciting, but was still a good story. I don’t necessarily like how the story goes back and forth between the past and present. The story would be much more powerful if the flashback was in the same point in the story. Also, the twist is not the most impactful thing to add to the plot. I found myself waiting for the story to end, or waiting for it to pick up. Overall, while the story was not mind blowing, or ground breaking, it was mediocre, and a way to pass time. It wasn’t horrible, it would just not be a novel I recommend.
