Sharon M. Draper is the author of Blended which was published on October 30, 2018. Blended was a great realistic fiction book showing Isabellas’ life, and her struggles. Throughout this book the main theme was identity and racism. Isabella struggles because her parents are divorced and a big part of her struggles is her skin color. Isabella is a 11 year old girl who is maturing and experiences the reality of what the world is really like. Isabella has been playing the piano almost her whole life, and right now playing piano is her escape, it’s her happy place. Isabella feels as if she's not the whole puzzle she's just pieces, meaning that since one parent is white and the other is black. Isabella is mixed and doesn't feel whole. Blended was very interesting the way Isabella puts things in perspective, the way she feels about things, shows what's going on. The author made this book very entertaining because she wanted the reader to make sure they knew where they were while reading this book. I do agree with the author and how she made the book based on how race is a big part and how skin colors either have more or less respect and how people get treated by others. But I don't think that race is all that matters. Not everyone will care about what color you are, it's about personality and respect that you show to yourself and others. The book shows that the possibilities are that the family creates their identity, their personalities, and even the type of cultures they share with each other. Blended has shown me that the big idea, or the main message, is never right in front of you. It's usually hidden or a small detail is the whole message and theme. I relate to Isabella that having divorced parents is a struggle but knowing that people love you and care about you is the main part. Overall this book was a good book. I would definitely recommend this book to others. When reading this book I learned new messages in life and learned that you can’t change yourself. You are who you are, which is something to be proud of.
