Five Survive by Holly Jackson is a young-adult thriller about a girl named Red and her five friends Reyna, Oliver, Arthur, Maddie, and Simon who are going on a road trip in an RV. On their trip, they get stuck in the middle of nowhere and something (or someone) has punctured all of their tires and the gas tank. They soon realize outside in the wilderness there is someone with a scoped rifle who is taking shots. They must work together to find out each other's secrets and who may be working with the sniper behind their backs. The catch? Only five people are allowed to survive.
Like most thrillers, Five Survive kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the story. It was divided into sections and every section represented an hour they were in the RV. Because the book only took place in one setting the whole time, it did feel slow, but every section ended with a plot twist. I rated it four stars because it was a very good book with a crazy ending, but it was nothing out of this world. There were characters that you loved and characters you hated. I really liked the main character because she felt very relatable and she was very unproblematic unlike many of the other characters. Overall, the book was exactly what a thriller should be, very suspenseful and made me not want to put it down.
Five Survive by Holly Jackson was an overall enjoyable read with a creative plot and well developed characters, but it wasn't the best thriller I've ever read. If you want to get into the young-adult thriller world of Holly Jackson, I suggest you start with her bestselling trilogy A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. It introduces you to the way she writes her characters and stories. I would recommend Five Survive to people who are interested in going deeper into Holly Jackson's writing. I also like cozy thrillers and maybe a little bit of romance would really enjoy this book. In conclusion, if my friends asked me for a mysterious, intriguing book to start, Five Survive would end up being one of their options.
