Stephen King’s first novel is a horror story called Carrie. Carrie is about a 16 year old, high school girl named Carrietta White. Carrietta goes by the name of Carrie and grew up with her very religious mother in Chamberlin, Maine. The thrilling story begins with Carrie getting teased and embarrassed while in the showers at school. The girls in the locker room began to taunt and throw things at Carrie which frightened her. As her emotions escalated the racks in the locker room fell over. What the other girls don’t know is that she has telekinetic powers. Carrie has had these powers ever since she was a little girl. The girls who were bullying Carrie in the locker room got in serious trouble. They could not go to their senior prom. The majority of the group did not agree with the consequences of their actions. However, one of the girls felt very bad and thought she deserved the punishment. To make Carrie feel better, she told her boyfriend that he should go with her to the dance. Once they were at the dance, things started to go downhill for all the students and the school itself. Lets just say that pigs blood and fire were involved. This fictional story was an amazing read. It was very entertaining and I could not stop reading once I started. I really enjoy Stephen King’s thrilling work and I am glad I read this novel. A major theme in this book is coming of age. Carrie starts to become less dependent on her abusive mom and starts to be a teenager. Carrie starts challenging the boundaries of her mother’s rules. Modern day issues that this book raises is violence in schools and bullying. Carrie gets bullied a lot throughout this book for being different. Unfortunately, this is not a new issue and it will probably always be a problem. I think King did a really good job expressing this theme and issue in the world with his own frightening twists. This book explores the idea that however one gets treated, good or bad, can have an affect on the world around them. This book has had a deep impact on me for this reason. Overall, I think this book was one of the best books I have ever read. People who enjoy fictional, horror stories will enjoy this novel.
